  1. Hi Jen - okay, I'm just getting in quick re. the difference between 'drawing people' and 'designing characters'. Justin will have been encouraging you to think structurally about character design - i.e. shape-based thinking. I'm looking at your drawings here and they are very illustrative - i.e. they look like illustrations in a book, but illustrations are not character designs, as character designs are about drawing in such a way as to be able to (one day) translate those designs into 3D forms - therefore you need to understand them as 'made from shapes'. I suspect I'm going to be giving these same examples to lots of students because they're so useful in terms of communicating what I mean by designing with shapes/from shapes. Look at these examples - and then try using simple line tools in Photoshop/Illustrator to work up your ideas for your characters:
